THE ENDS OF THE EARTH
From: karin@lfa.com KarinCrawford, FWD by Gwenhanna@aol.com Here's another book that my husband brought home from the library: The Ends of the Earth by Kaplan. Kaplan travels to what he sees as the "forgotten" areas of the world globally, but areas that he feels are very important for the future of our global society. He spent a year traveling and living among the common people in SW Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. He brilliantly weaves together insights on the economy, ethnic tensions, national/expat relationships, regional history, and the political scene. His background is as a foreign correspondent. This is a hard-hitting, but very helpful book for all who are concerned about these regions! My husband and I traveled to Central Asia last year. As we read that section, we were amazed to have our experience written in detail before us! We were saying to ourselves, "Yes, that's exactly what it was like!" And he added to it by pulling in issues and background that we hadn't been aware of.
